Brother MFC-295CN
It’s great to save money on a printer, though sometimes those savings are tempered by lingering doubts. Foremost among them: What are you really giving up to get a low price? There can be obvious and not-so-obvious drawbacks to a low purchase price. The $99.99-list-price Brother MFC-295CN has both, though it could still be a good choice for a budget-sensitive home user, depending on your requirements. On the plus side, it has the fax capabilities you don’t often find in a sub-$100 all-in-one printer. (Plus, at the time we wrote this, we were seeing this model already discounted to around $80.) It's network-friendly, with a built-in Ethernet port, and the overall print quality is quite good, especially at this price point. On the minus side, the MFC-295CN is one of the slowest printers we’ve evaluated recently. The per-page ink costs are higher than usual. And there’s no Wi-Fi, though Brother does offer a similar model with Wi-Fi, the MFC-495CW, for a bit more money.
